21st Century Cape Cod - Broadband Summit II
June 26, 2008 - Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

The Broadband Summit II was a tremendous success with approximately 140 attendees.  The participants represented local, regional, state, and federal interests.

The Summit was hosted by the Barnstable County Commissioners, Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, Cape Cod Technology Council, OpenCape Corporation, the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative's John Adams Innovation Institute, and Cape Cod Community College. View Agenda

Keynote speakers Sharon Gillett, Commissioner of Telecommunications and Cable for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and Federal Communications Commissioner Michael J. Copps provided interesting and insightful speeches that laid out the broader state and national issues that impact the region and its efforts to build broadband capacity. Watch Videos of Presentations

A tremendous amount of energy was evident and the discussions throughout the day created greater opportunities for moving the issue forward.

the problem

Our region lacks critical data transport infrastructure.
Without this infrastructure we cannot compete economically.
Without this infrastructure our students are missing what students in other parts of the country take for granted.
Without this infrastructure, our research institutions
are constrained.
Without this infrastructure several communities on the Cape will have very limited access to broadband.
Without this infrastructure, we are missing a key
element needed to recover from a natural disaster.

the solution

The OpenCape network will provide reliable, redundant, and secure backhaul communications for public and commercial access networks in the Cape Cod region.

The network will support open access and promote competition.

This broadband network is designed to survive a hurricane and will also provide priority access to primary emergency evacuation centers in the region.
